The Unicorn Quest by Kamila Benko

An enchanting, exciting fantasy about a real-world girl searching for her sister in a land full of magic and strange creatures, blending the timeless feel of A Wrinkle in Time with Frozen’s powerful themes of identity, enchantment, and sisterhood.

Claire Martinson still worries about her older sister Sophie, who battled a mysterious illness last year. But things are back to normal as they move into Windermere Manor . . . until the sisters climb a strange ladder in a fireplace and enter the magical land of Arden.

There, they find a world in turmoil. The four guilds of magic no longer trust each other, the beloved unicorns have disappeared, and terrible wraiths roam freely. Scared, the girls return home. But when Sophie vanishes in the night, it will take all of Claire's courage to climb back up the ladder, find her sister, and uncover the unicorns' greatest secret.

REVIEW: I've had this book in my TBR pile for quite some time, because I mean who doesn't love unicorns. Am I right? I love the relationship between Sophie and Claire because it is very relatable as far as siblings go. There is a lot of push and pull between the two and some things that older sister Sophie is struggling with on her own to protect Claire and of course it comes across as moodiness. Arden is the magical world they come across...maybe accidentally? We meet Sena and Nett from the magical world of Arden who are the greatest secondary characters for a middle grade book. We learn about the 4 guilds of magic and what makes them different and special, which was really cool! There is a lot left to question even after the close of this book but it looks like there are two other books in this series, so hopefully those questions will be answered there. This book is a great mix of humor and adventure (lite) and perfect for younger middle grade readers. This heroic journey to find Sophie and the unicorn harp is the perfect introduction to adventure fantasy for a budding reader.
