Scythe by Neal Shusterman

Thou shalt kill.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

REVIEW: While working in my local bookstore this was a book that every summer would fly of our shelves as a summer reading book for the nearby school districts. I always thought it was something I wanted to get to eventually, so when my 13 year old asked if we could read it together I was all in. While she lost interest pretty quickly, not a reader that one, I couldn't out it down! It brings about so many questions and would make for great conversation. Living in a world with no death or aging seems like it would be incredible, but forever is a long time. I think for some it would be easy to fall into a life or killing with no consequences. And all it would mean is a difference between those who love their jobs and those who just do it because they know it has to get done.....right? Morals would really hold no weight is a world like this and that would be a scary thing. There are some great characters who definitely show both sides of the spectrum. There are a lot of exciting moments too that really kept me on my toes. This was a five star read for me and I already ordered the next two in the series!!
